If you bet on football, you've probably used at least two of these four sites. They're often mentioned in the same breath, but they're built for very different jobs.

This is a side-by-side comparison written for bettors, not casual fans: what each platform does well, what it doesn't do, and how to combine them.

Disclosure: we build StatPair. We've tried to be fair about what it doesn't do as well as what it does.

Doesn't do: live scores, live in-play data or xG.

FlashScore

Built for: fans who want live scores and basic match data.
Pricing: free with ads.
Strengths: fast live scores, very wide coverage, line-ups, and basic match stats (including xG for major leagues).

What each platform does NOT do

  • StatPair doesn't show live scores, live in-play data or xG.
  • FlashScore isn't built for player-prop research, hit-rate filters or referee analysis.
  • SofaScore has no cross-league hit-rate search or pre-match betting workflow.
  • FBref no longer has xG or advanced metrics, and it's a database rather than a tool.

Workflow example: a player shots prop

Task: is "Player X over 1.5 shots" good value this weekend?

With StatPair: open the player (or hover his name on any site with the Chrome extension), check his shots in his last 10 matches with the home/away filter, check the opponent, look at the AI Analyzer's OVER/UNDER projection, and compare with the odds.

With SofaScore: open the player page, scroll through recent matches and count shots per game by hand, then check the opponent separately.

With FBref: find the player's match logs, filter by season, count the relevant games and work out the rate yourself.

With FlashScore: check line-ups and basic match stats; per-player shot history is limited.

All four can get you an answer. The difference is how many steps it takes, and whether you can run the same check across every player in every league at once (StatPair's Trends Finder).

When to use which

Use StatPair when…

  • You bet player props, bet builders, cards, fouls or corners.
  • You want hit rates across every league in one query.
  • You want referee stats before cards and fouls bets.

Use FlashScore when…

  • You want live scores during matches.
  • You're following obscure lower-division matches.

Use SofaScore when…

  • You're following a match live and want xG and momentum.
  • You want a mobile in-play experience.

Use FBref when…

  • You need historical basic stats for a model or research project.
  • You don't need xG or real-time data.

Most bettors use 2-3 of these together. A common stack: StatPair for pre-match player and referee research, SofaScore or FotMob for xG and live viewing, and FlashScore for live scores.

FAQ

Q: Is StatPair worth paying for if FBref is free?
A: They solve different problems. FBref is a free historical database; StatPair is a research tool for player props and team-stat markets with filters, hit-rate search and projections. If you bet props weekly, the time saved is the main reason to pay. If you only build occasional season-long models, free sources may be enough.

Q: Does FlashScore show xG?
A: Yes, for many major leagues. It's built around live scores and broad coverage rather than betting research.

Q: Does StatPair have xG?
A: No. StatPair focuses on the stats player-prop and team-stat markets are settled on (shots, shots on target, fouls, tackles, cards, corners, passes). For xG, use Understat, SofaScore or FotMob alongside it.

Q: Does FBref still have xG?
A: No. FBref removed xG and its other advanced Opta metrics in January 2026. Best xG websites in 2026 →

Q: What about Understat and WhoScored?
A: Understat is the best free xG source for the big five European leagues. WhoScored is known for player ratings and detailed match centres. Both are useful supplements.

Bottom line

Each platform is best at a different job:

  • FlashScore → live scores.
  • SofaScore → live in-play stats and xG.
  • FBref → historical basic stats.
  • StatPair → pre-match research for player props, cards, fouls and corners.
