Most anytime goalscorer bets are placed on one stat: goals scored recently. That's the noisiest number you can pick. In our study of 372,650 player starts, goals were far less repeatable (split-half correlation 0.66) than shots (0.89) or shots on target (0.81).
Three player stats tell you much more, and they take about 90 seconds to check: expected goals (or shots) per 90 minutes, shots on target, and minutes played.
The math is simple: at typical odds of 3.70, the implied probability is 27%. If your numbers say a player scores in 34% of his starts, that's a 7-point edge. If they say 22%, skip.
Here's the complete framework.

Key Goalscorer Statistics
1. Shots Per Game
What it measures: How often player shoots
Minimum for value: 2.5+ shots per game
| Shots per game | Quality | Betting Potential |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1.5 | Low volume | Avoid unless huge odds |
| 1.5 - 2.5 | Medium volume | Consider if good xG |
| 2.5 - 3.5 | High volume | Good for props |
| Over 3.5 | Elite volume | Strong value potential |
2. Shots on Target (SoT)
Why it matters: Better predictor than total shots
Formula: SoT% = (Shots on Target / Total Shots) × 100
Good SoT%: 40%+ is excellent
Example:
Player A: 3 shots per game, 30% on target = 0.9 SoT per game
Player B: 2 shots per game, 50% on target = 1.0 SoT per game
→ Player B is better bet despite fewer shots
3. Expected Goals (xG) Per Game
The most important stat for goalscorers
xG Guidelines:
Per game:
- Under 0.3 xG: Avoid for anytime goalscorer
- 0.3 - 0.5 xG: Reasonable at good odds (3.00+)
- 0.5 - 0.7 xG: Strong anytime scorer bet
- Over 0.7 xG: Elite, even at lower odds
Per shot:
- Under 0.10: Poor shot quality
- 0.10 - 0.15: Average shot quality
- Over 0.15: Elite positioning/finishing
Goalscorer Markets Explained
Anytime Goalscorer
Player scores at any time during the match
Best for:
- High-volume shooters (2.5+ shots per game)
- Players with 0.5+ xG per game
- Home games (strikers score more at home)
Typical odds: 2.00 - 4.00
Value threshold:
If player has 30% chance to score, odds should be 3.30+
First Goalscorer
Player scores the first goal of the match
Much harder to hit:
- The player has to score before anyone else on either team, so the chance is always well below his anytime probability
- If a match finishes 0-0, every first goalscorer bet loses (most bookmakers settle "no goalscorer" as a loss)
- You need much higher odds for value
Best for:
- Penalty takers
- Players on form (scored in last 2-3 games)
- Fast starters (check time of goals scored)
2+ Goals (Brace)
Player scores two or more goals
Rare:
- Using a Poisson model, a player with an expected 0.6 goals in the match scores 2+ about 12% of the time: 1 - e^-0.6 × (1 + 0.6) = 0.12
- That means fair odds of about 8.20; anything shorter has no value
Only bet when:
- Player facing a weak defence (one that concedes a lot of shots and goals)
- Player has 0.7+ xG per game
- Recent brace form
Home vs Away Scoring
Critical: Players usually score more at home
Across the big five European leagues in 2025/26, home teams scored 1.53 goals per match vs 1.23 for away teams. Individual players can have much bigger splits.
Example (hypothetical) split for a striker:
- Home: 0.6 xG per game
- Away: 0.4 xG per game
Always check home/away splits separately!
Analyzing a Goalscorer Bet
Step-by-step example (hypothetical):
Match: Team A vs Team B (Team A at home)
Player: Team A's first-choice striker
Market: Anytime Goalscorer @ 2.20
Analysis:
1. Recent form (last 8 games):
- xG per game: 0.68
- Shots per game: 3.2
- Shots on target per game: 1.4
- Goals: 5 (slightly overperforming xG)
2. Home stats:
- Home xG: 0.75 per game
- Scored in 5 of his last 8 home starts
3. Opponent defence:
- Team B concedes plenty of shots and goals away from home
4. Calculate probability:
- Expected xG this match: ~0.8 (allowing for the weak opponent)
- Probability to score (Poisson): 1 - e^-0.8 = ~55%
5. Check odds value:
- Odds 2.20 = 45.5% implied probability
- Your assessment: 55% probability
- Edge: 9.5% → STRONG VALUE
