Goalscorer bets are close to coin flips at best. Shots on target are different: if a player averages 1.5 shots on target per game, a simple Poisson estimate says he'll hit 1+ in roughly 78% of matches.
Our data backs this up. In our study of 372,650 player starts, shots on target were far more repeatable than goals (split-half correlation 0.81 vs 0.66).
Lower variance and a higher hit rate than goalscorer bets. Here's the complete shots betting framework.
Why Bet on Shots?
Advantages over goalscorer bets:
- Lower variance (a player can hit the target without scoring)
- More frequent hits (easier than scoring)
- Less bookmaker and bettor attention than goalscorer markets
- Driven by role and volume, so less dependent on a single moment of finishing
Markets available:
- Player shots on target Over/Under (usually 0.5, 1.5, 2.5)
- Player total shots Over/Under
- First player to have a shot on target
- Player 2+ shots on target
Key Statistics for Shot Betting
1. Shots Per Game
Context: across all starting players in our study, the average was 1.00 shot and 0.34 shots on target per start, and only 25.2% of starters had 1+ shot on target. Forwards and attacking midfielders are far above that; defenders far below.
For a top-level reference point: Erling Haaland averaged 3.7 shots per Premier League start in 2025/26, with 47% on target.
Example analysis (hypothetical):
Player A: 3.2 shots per game
Player B: 1.8 shots per game
→ Player A has 78% higher shot volume
2. Shots on Target (SoT)
Most important stat for this market
Using a Poisson estimate, here's what an SoT average implies for the 1+ and 2+ lines:
| SoT per game | Chance of 1+ SoT | Chance of 2+ SoT | Betting potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 39% | 9% | Over 0.5 only at big odds |
| 1.0 | 63% | 26% | Over 0.5 at fair-or-better prices |
| 1.5 | 78% | 44% | Over 0.5 often short-priced; check Over 1.5 |
| 2.0 | 86% | 59% | Consider Over 1.5 |
| 2.5 | 92% | 71% | Over 1.5 / 2.5 territory |
Formulas: P(1+) = 1 - e^(-average). P(2+) = 1 - e^(-average) × (1 + average).
Real shot counts vary more than a pure Poisson model assumes (some games a player is starved, others he shoots constantly), so treat these as upper-end estimates and check the player's actual hit rate.
3. Shot Accuracy (SoT%)
Formula: (Shots on Target / Total Shots) × 100
Rough guidelines:
Under 30%: Poor accuracy - risky for SoT bets
30-40%: Average accuracy - calculate carefully
40-50%: Good accuracy - solid profile
Over 50%: Excellent accuracy - but check the sample size, high percentages often regress
Example (hypothetical):
Player A:
- 3.0 shots per game
- 40% accuracy
- = 1.2 SoT per game
Player B:
- 2.5 shots per game
- 50% accuracy
- = 1.25 SoT per game
→ Similar SoT expectation, but Player A's volume is more reliable. Shot volume is more repeatable than accuracy, so a high-volume shooter is usually the safer profile.
Home vs Away Shot Rates
Players and teams usually shoot more at home.
Real example: Manchester City averaged 16.4 shots per home game and 14.9 per away game in the 2025/26 Premier League. Across Europe's big-5 leagues, home teams scored 1.53 goals per match vs 1.23 for away teams.
Why?
- More possession at home
- More attacking intent
- Opponents sit deeper
The size of the split varies a lot between players. Always check home/away separately!
Analyzing Opponent Defense
Opponent matters hugely:
Weak Defence Profile
Signs (good for your player bets):
- Concedes lots of shots per game
- Concedes lots of shots on target
- Recent heavy defeats
- Injuries to key centre-backs
→ Expect your player to get MORE shots
Strong Defence Profile
Warning signs:
- Concedes few shots per game
- Organised, deep defending
- Strong goalkeeper (affects goals more than SoT)
→ Expect your player to get FEWER shots
Use StatPair's opponent filter and team stats to see how many shots the opponent has allowed recently. For xG against, use Understat or FotMob.
Position-Based Shot Rates
| Position | Shot volume | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Strikers | Highest | Over 0.5 / 1.5 SoT |
| Attacking mids | Medium to high | Over 0.5 SoT, total shots |
| Wingers | Medium to high | Over 0.5 SoT, total shots |
| Defensive mids | Low | Usually avoid |
| Defenders | Very low | Avoid (except set-piece threats) |
Interesting finding from our study: midfielders' shot numbers were more repeatable (0.83) than forwards' (0.66) - probably because their shooting role changes less from game to game.
Popular Shot Markets
Player Over 0.5 Shots on Target
Most common market
Who to bet on:
- Players with a high SoT average and hit rate on this line
- Playing at home
- Facing a weak defence
- Expected to play most of the match
Value threshold:
If you estimate the player hits in 60% of games, the odds need to be above 1.67 (1 / 0.60) for value.
Watch the hot-streak trap: in our study, players who had 1+ SoT in 8 or more of their last 10 starts did it again only 62.9% of the time, not the 84% their run suggested.
Player Over 1.5 Shots on Target
Higher variance, bigger odds
Who to bet on:
- High-volume shooters
- Home game vs a weak defence
- Recent matches show regular 2+ SoT
- Expected open, high-shot game
Value threshold:
If you estimate the player hits 30% of the time, the odds need to be above 3.33 for value.
Player 2+ Shots on Target
Same outcome as Over 1.5, different label
Compare prices for both formats - bookmakers sometimes price them differently.
