In this article

Correct score betting pays 7-15x your stake on the common scorelines.

Sounds attractive, right?

The catch: most correct score bettors pick a scoreline on a hunch - and lose long-term.

Why?

Because predicting exact scorelines is one of the hardest betting markets in football.

But here's what helps:

You can replace guesswork with statistical probability models.

Statistical approach:

  • Poisson distribution (estimate the probability of each score)
  • Score frequency awareness (which scores are common, which are rare)
  • Goal expectation models (goals averages or xG as inputs)
  • Strategic betting (focus on 2-3 likely scores, not exotic outcomes)

This guide shows you how to approach correct score betting using mathematics, not gut feeling.

How often does each score happen? In 13,355 matches, 1-1 was the most common result (12.3%), and 3-0 happened in 6.1% of matches. The full table for every scoreline, plus how to calculate correct score probability yourself, is in our correct score probability guide.

What is Correct Score Betting?

Correct Score betting = predict exact final score of a match.

Examples:

✅ You bet 2-1, final score is 2-1 - WIN @ 7.00-11.00 odds
❌ You bet 2-1, final score is 3-1 - LOSE
❌ You bet 2-1, final score is 1-2 - LOSE (order matters!)

Key features:

  • High odds (typically 7.00-20.00+ for common scores)
  • Low probability (even the most likely score is usually around 10-15%)
  • High bookmaker margin (much higher than on the match result market, because the margin is spread across dozens of scorelines)

Correct Score vs Other Markets

Correct Score:

  • Exact scoreline required
  • Odds: 7.00-20.00+
  • Difficulty: Very High

Match Result (1X2):

  • Just need winner
  • Odds: 1.50-3.50
  • Difficulty: Medium

Over/Under 2.5:

  • Total goals range
  • Odds: 1.70-2.10
  • Difficulty: Medium

BTTS:

  • Both teams score yes/no
  • Odds: 1.60-2.20
  • Difficulty: Medium-Low

Correct score = hardest market, highest variance, biggest payouts.

Why Correct Score is Hard (But Not Hopeless)

Low Probability Events

Even the most likely score in a typical match has only about a 10-12% chance (see the Poisson table below)

Translation: The MOST LIKELY score happens roughly 1 game in 8 to 10.

For comparison:

  • Favorite to win (1X2): often 50-70% probability
  • Over 2.5 goals: 52.9% of Big-5 league matches in 2025/26
  • BTTS: 56% of Premier League matches in 2025/26
  • Correct score: usually 5-15% probability (for ANY single score)

This means high variance - you'll lose most bets even when analyzing correctly.

High Variance

You can analyze perfectly and still lose 9/10 bets.

Example (hypothetical):

You predict 2-1 based on:

  • Goals averages or xG
  • Poisson model
  • Matchup context

True probability: 10%

You bet 10 matches:

  • Expected wins: 1
  • Actual wins: often 0, 1 or 2 (variance)

At 10% true probability, the chance of going 0/10 is 0.9^10 = 35%.

Variance = why bankroll management is critical in correct score betting.

Bigger Bookmaker Margin

Match result market: typically around 5% margin

Correct score market: usually far higher

How to check it yourself:

Fair odds for all scorelines should total: 100% probability

Add up 1 / odds for every scoreline the bookmaker offers (including "any other score")

The amount above 100% is the margin - it's commonly well into double figures in this market.

Translation: You start with a much bigger handicap than in 1X2 or Over/Under.

This makes correct score betting VERY DIFFICULT to profit from long-term.

When It Makes Sense to Bet

Correct score betting makes sense when:

✅ You've identified value (your probability clearly above the bookmaker's implied probability)
✅ Multiple scores covered (bet 2-3 scorelines for insurance)
✅ Small stakes (0.25-0.5% bankroll due to variance)
✅ Clear statistical indicators (not guessing)

Avoid correct score when:

❌ Just "feeling" a scoreline
❌ Chasing big odds (exotic scores like 4-3)
❌ Betting every match (too high variance)
❌ Large stakes (variance will destroy bankroll)

Statistical Methods for Predicting Scores

1. Poisson Distribution (The Foundation)

Poisson distribution = mathematical model for the number of times an event happens in a fixed period

In football: Estimates the probability of 0, 1, 2, 3+ goals for each team

What you need:

  • Team A expected goals (home)
  • Team B expected goals (away)

Poisson formula gives:

  • Probability Team A scores 0, 1, 2, 3+ goals
  • Probability Team B scores 0, 1, 2, 3+ goals
  • Combined = probability of each scoreline

Example (hypothetical):

Team A (home) vs Team B (away)

Expected goals:

  • Team A: 1.8 goals
  • Team B: 1.1 goals

Poisson output (bookmaker odds are hypothetical):

ScoreProbabilityFair OddsBookmaker OddsValue?
1-110.9%9.188.00❌ No value
1-09.9%10.109.00❌ No value
2-19.8%10.2011.00✅ Slight value
2-08.9%11.2212.00✅ Slight value
0-05.5%18.1715.00❌ No value

Strategy: Consider 2-1 and 2-0 (the only prices above fair odds in this model)

One caution: the basic Poisson model tends to slightly underestimate low-scoring draws (0-0, 1-1). Many modellers apply a small adjustment (the Dixon-Coles correction) - or at least treat a "value" 0-0 or 1-1 from a basic model with suspicion.

2. Expected Goals (xG) as Input

Where to get expected goals for Poisson model?

Method 1: Team averages (simple)

Example (hypothetical):

Team A:

  • Home goals scored average: 1.9
  • vs
  • Team B away goals conceded average: 1.4

Team A expected goals: (1.9 + 1.4) / 2 = 1.65 goals

Method 2: xG-based (advanced)

Team A:

  • Home xG average: 2.1
  • vs
  • Team B away xGA average: 1.3

Team A expected goals: (2.1 + 1.3) / 2 = 1.70 goals

xG is often more stable over small samples (less affected by finishing luck)

Get xG from Understat, FotMob or SofaScore, and goal averages with home/away splits from StatPair.

3. Team Offensive/Defensive Strength

Adjust expected goals based on strength:

Example (hypothetical):

Team A home attack: 1.3x league average (strong)
Team B away defense: 0.9x league average (concedes less than average)

Expected goals calculation:

League average home goals: 1.53 (Big-5 European leagues, 2025/26)

Team A vs Team B:

1.53 × 1.3 (Team A attack) × 0.9 (Team B defense) = 1.79 expected goals

This adjusts for team quality (vs just using averages)

4. Score Frequency (What's Common, What's Rare)

Not all scores are equal - and leagues differ.

Using the real Big-5 averages for 2025/26 (home teams 1.53 goals per match, away teams 1.23), a Poisson model gives these as the most likely scores for an "average" match:

  1. 1-1 - 11.9%
  2. 1-0 - 9.7%
  3. 2-1 - 9.1%
  4. 0-1 - 7.8%
  5. 2-0 - 7.4%

Translation: Even in an average match, no single score is more likely than about 1 in 8.

Avoid exotic scores (4-3, 5-2 are well under 1% in most matches)

2-25.6%17.8565.2%
0-24.8%20.8969.9%
3-14.6%21.5274.6%

Key Insight: The top 10 scores cover about three quarters of outcomes in this model

Strategy: Focus your analysis on these scores (ignore 4-3, 5-0, etc.), and replace the averages with the actual teams' numbers for each match

League-Specific Patterns

Real 2025/26 numbers (StatPair database):

Bundesliga (higher scoring):

  • Avg goals/game: 3.23
  • 42.9% of matches had 4+ goals
  • Shift probability towards 2-1, 3-1, 2-2 and away from 0-0 and 1-0

Serie A (lower scoring):

  • Avg goals/game: 2.42
  • Only 21.7% of matches had 4+ goals
  • 9.7% of matches finished 0-0 (the most of the big five)

La Liga: only 3.8% of matches finished 0-0, despite a similar goals average to the Premier League

Strategy: Adjust score predictions by league - but always start from the two teams' numbers

Home vs Away Scoreline Differences

When you expect a home win, the relevant scores are:

  1. 1-0 (tight home win)
  2. 2-0 (comfortable home win)
  3. 2-1 (home edge)
  4. 3-0 / 3-1 (home dominance)

Away wins:

  1. 0-1 (tight away win)
  2. 1-2 (away win)
  3. 0-2 (away dominance)

Draws:

  1. 1-1 (both teams score)
  2. 0-0 (defensive stalemate)
  3. 2-2 (attacking but leaky defenses)

Strategy: When you predict a winner, focus on relevant scorelines (not all possible scores)

Reading the Model Against the Market

Compare the "fair odds" from your model to the bookmaker odds to find value.

If the bookmaker's price is higher than your fair odds, it may be value. If it's lower (the usual case, given the margin), skip it.

Correct Score Strategy (Statistical Approach)

Focus on Probable Scores (1-0, 2-1, 1-1, 2-0)

Don't bet exotic scores (4-3, 5-2, etc.)

Why:

  • 4-3 is a fraction of a percent in most matches
  • Bookmakers price these with big margins, so even 100.00 odds are rarely value
  • Variance is massive

Focus on the most likely 6-10 scores for the specific match:

Typically 1-0, 2-1, 1-1, 2-0, 0-0, 0-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-1

Example (hypothetical):

Team A vs Team B:

❌ Don't bet: 4-2, 5-3, 3-3
✅ Do bet: 2-1, 2-0, 1-1 (if value found)

Use Insurance (Bet 2-3 Scores)

Single correct score bet = usually 8-15% win probability

2-3 correct scores = roughly 25-35% combined probability

Strategy:

Identify the 2-3 scores with the best value and bet all of them

Example (hypothetical):

Strong home side (2.4 expected goals) vs weak away side (0.7 expected goals)

Poisson analysis:

  • 2-0: 13.0% probability @ 8.50 odds (EV +10%) ✅
  • 3-0: 10.4% probability @ 11.00 odds (EV +14%) ✅
  • 2-1: 9.1% probability @ 12.00 odds (EV +9%) ✅

Bet all three:

  • £5 on 2-0
  • £5 on 3-0
  • £5 on 2-1

Combined probability: 32.5%

If ANY hits, you profit (the lowest return is £42.50 from a £15 total stake)

This is the "cover a few scores" approach - it smooths variance, but every bet still has to be +EV on its own

When to Bet 0-0 (Defensive Matchups)

0-0 can be a sensible correct score in specific matchups.

When to consider 0-0:

✅ Two low-scoring teams (both around 1 goal per game or less)
✅ Both teams keep plenty of clean sheets
✅ Low-scoring league (Serie A had the most 0-0s of the big five in 2025/26: 9.7%)
✅ Cautious context (derby, cup tie, one team happy with a draw)

Example (hypothetical):

Team A vs Team B:

  • Team A expected goals: 1.1
  • Team B expected goals: 0.8
  • Both teams defensive-minded

0-0 odds: 7.50

Poisson probability: 15.0%

Fair odds: 6.69

EV: 0.150 × 7.50 = 1.125 (+12.5%) ✅

Bet 0-0 + 1-0 for insurance (1-0 is 16.5% in this model, fair odds 6.08)

Expected Goals-Based Predictions

Use xG to input into Poisson model:

Step 1: Get team xG averages (home/away specific)

Step 2: Adjust for opponent (xGA)

Step 3: Input into Poisson calculator

Step 4: Compare probabilities to bookmaker odds

Step 5: Bet scores with +EV

Example (hypothetical):

Team A (home) vs Team B (away)

Team A home xG: 2.3
Team B away xGA: 2.1
Team A expected goals: 2.2

Team B away xG: 0.9
Team A home xGA: 0.8
Team B expected goals: 0.85

Poisson model output (bookmaker odds hypothetical):

  • 2-0: 11.5% @ 8.00 odds (fair: 8.73) ❌ No value
  • 3-0: 8.4% @ 13.00 odds (fair: 11.90) ✅ Value
  • 2-1: 9.7% @ 11.00 odds (fair: 10.27) ✅ Value
  • 3-1: 7.1% @ 15.00 odds (fair: 14.00) ✅ Value

Bet: 3-0, 2-1, 3-1 (all priced above fair odds)

How to Use Poisson for Correct Score

Step-by-step:

Step 1: Calculate Expected Goals

Home team expected goals:

(Home team home goals/game + Away team away goals conceded/game) / 2

Away team expected goals:

(Away team away goals/game + Home team home goals conceded/game) / 2

Example (hypothetical):

Team A (home) vs Team B (away)

Team A home: 1.8 goals scored, 1.1 conceded
Team B away: 1.4 goals scored, 1.3 conceded

Team A expected goals: (1.8 + 1.3) / 2 = 1.55
Team B expected goals: (1.4 + 1.1) / 2 = 1.25

Step 2: Use Poisson Formula

Formula:

P(x goals) = (λ^x × e^-λ) / x!

Where:

  • λ = expected goals
  • x = actual goals scored
  • e = 2.71828

You don't need to do it by hand - use a calculator:

  • Any online Poisson calculator
  • Excel: =POISSON.DIST(x, λ, FALSE)

Step 3: Calculate Score Probabilities

For each score, multiply probabilities:

P(2-1) = P(Home scores 2) × P(Away scores 1)

Example:

Team A 2 goals: 25.5% (from Poisson with λ=1.55)
Team B 1 goal: 35.8% (from Poisson with λ=1.25)

P(2-1) = 0.255 × 0.358 = 9.1%

Fair odds: 1 / 0.091 = 10.95

Bookmaker odds (hypothetical): 9.00

No value (bookmaker odds below fair odds)

Step 4: Compare to Bookmaker Odds

Create table (bookmaker odds hypothetical):

ScoreYour ProbabilityFair OddsBookmaker OddsValue?
1-111.8%8.497.00❌ No
1-09.4%10.6111.00✅ Slight
2-19.1%10.959.00❌ No
2-07.3%13.6915.00✅ Yes

Bet: 1-0 and 2-0 (priced above fair odds)

Excel/Online Tools

Excel Poisson Function:

Excel formula: =POISSON.DIST(goals, expected_goals, FALSE)

Example:

=POISSON.DIST(2, 1.55, FALSE)

Result: 0.255 = 25.5% chance of exactly 2 goals

Online tools:

  • Online Poisson calculators
  • Football Poisson prediction spreadsheets
  • Your own Excel grid (a 6×6 table of home goals × away goals covers almost every outcome)

Reading Probability Outputs

Poisson gives you probability for each goal count:

Team A (λ = 1.55):

  • 0 goals: 21.2%
  • 1 goal: 32.9%
  • 2 goals: 25.5%
  • 3 goals: 13.2%
  • 4+ goals: 7.2%

Team B (λ = 1.25):

  • 0 goals: 28.7%
  • 1 goal: 35.8%
  • 2 goals: 22.4%
  • 3 goals: 9.3%
  • 4+ goals: 3.8%

Combine for each scoreline:

2-0: 25.5% × 28.7% = 7.3%
1-1: 32.9% × 35.8% = 11.8%
3-1: 13.2% × 35.8% = 4.7%

Focus on the highest probability scores (and only bet those priced above fair odds)

Using StatPair for Correct Score Analysis

Team Goals Scored Average (Home/Away)

In StatPair, open the team's stats and filter by:

  • Home games only (for home team)
  • Away games only (for away team)
  • Last N matches (e.g. last 10)

Get:

  • Average goals/game
  • Goals in each of the last 10 games

Use for: Poisson expected goals input

Goals Conceded Average

Same filters (home/away specific)

Use for: Adjusting opponent expected goals

First-Half and Second-Half Splits

Use the first half / second half filter - useful if you also bet half-time scores or HT/FT

Recent Scorelines (Pattern Recognition)

Check the team's match history for recent results

Example (hypothetical):

Team A last 10 home games:

  • 3-0, 2-0, 4-1, 3-1, 2-0, 3-0, 2-1, 3-0, 2-0, 4-0

Pattern: Mostly comfortable home wins

But remember: 10 games is a small sample - use it to sanity-check your Poisson inputs, not to replace them

Past Meetings

Use the opponent filter to see previous matches between the two teams

Look for:

  • Common scorelines
  • Whether meetings tend to be open or tight

Example (hypothetical):

Team A vs Team B, last 6 meetings:

  • 1-1, 2-2, 3-1, 1-1, 4-0, 1-1

Pattern: Often 1-1

Caution: Squads and managers change, so treat old meetings as weak evidence compared with current goals data

StatPair advantage: Home/away goals averages and filters in seconds, instead of building them by hand

Worked Example: A Correct Score Shortlist (Hypothetical)

Match: Team A (home) vs Team B (away)

Inputs from StatPair (last 15 matches, home/away filtered):

  • Team A home: 1.8 scored, 1.1 conceded
  • Team B away: 1.4 scored, 1.3 conceded

Expected goals: Team A 1.55, Team B 1.25

Model shortlist: 1-1 (11.8%), 1-0 (9.4%), 2-1 (9.1%), 2-0 (7.3%)

Check prices: Only bet the scores where bookmaker odds are above fair odds (in the table above, 1-0 and 2-0)

Stake: 0.25-0.5% of bankroll per score

Track results: Record your model probability and the odds for every bet in a spreadsheet, so you can see over hundreds of bets whether your model is beating the price

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common football scores?

Using the real Big-5 averages for 2025/26 (home 1.53, away 1.23 goals per match), a Poisson model ranks them:

  1. 1-1 - 11.9%
  2. 1-0 - 9.7%
  3. 2-1 - 9.1%
  4. 0-1 - 7.8%
  5. 2-0 - 7.4%

These 5 scores = about 46% of outcomes in an average match.

Strategy: Focus correct score bets on likely scores (not exotic scores like 4-3)

How do you predict correct score?

Statistical method:

  1. Calculate expected goals (team averages + opponent adjustments)
  2. Use Poisson distribution (calculate probability of each scoreline)
  3. Compare to bookmaker odds (find value)
  4. Bet 2-3 value scores (insurance strategy)
  5. Small stakes (high variance market)

Avoid: Guessing based on "gut feeling"

Is correct score betting profitable?

Very difficult, but possible.

Challenges:

  • High bookmaker margin (much higher than 1X2)
  • Low probability outcomes (usually 5-15% per score)
  • High variance (you'll lose most bets)

Who has a chance:

  • Value bettors using Poisson models
  • Bettors covering 2-3 value scores
  • Low-stake, long-term approach

Most bettors lose - especially those picking scores without a model

What is Poisson distribution in football?

Poisson distribution = mathematical model for how often an event happens in a fixed period

In football:

Estimates the probability of 0, 1, 2, 3+ goals based on expected goals

Example:

Team expected goals: 1.6

Poisson outputs:

  • 0 goals: 20.2%
  • 1 goal: 32.3%
  • 2 goals: 25.8%
  • 3 goals: 13.8%

Use: Calculate each scoreline probability

Should I bet multiple correct scores?

Often, yes.

Why:

  • Single score: usually 8-15% win probability
  • 2-3 scores: roughly 25-35% combined probability
  • Reduces variance
  • Improves consistency

Example:

Instead of: £15 on 2-1 only

Do: £5 on 2-1, £5 on 2-0, £5 on 1-1

If ANY hits, you profit (as long as each score's odds are above 3.00) - but each score should still be +EV on its own

What's the easiest correct score to predict?

1-1, 1-0 and 2-1 are usually the most likely scores

Why:

  • Most common scores in typical matches (around 9-12% each)
  • Cover the majority of close matches
  • Easiest to estimate reliably

Matchup types where one score stands out:

  • 0-0: Two low-scoring teams (can reach 15% in a model with low expected goals)
  • 2-0 / 3-0: Strong home vs weak away side

Avoid: Exotic scores (4-3, 5-2) even though odds tempting
