Quick answer: the average football match has 9.7 corners. Across 9,545 league matches in 29 leagues from the 2025/26 season, home teams won 5.3 corners per match and away teams 4.4. The first half produced 4.6 corners and the second half 5.2. The most common total was exactly 10, and half of all matches (50.3%) reached 10 or more.

So when a bookmaker such as 1xBet, SportyBet or Betika puts the main corners line at 9.5 or 10.5, it isn't guessing. That's where the average match sits. The useful question is how far a specific league, and then a specific match, sits from that number.

Data: StatPair match database · 29 domestic leagues · 2025/26 season (2025 season for leagues that run on the calendar year) · league matches only, no cups, friendlies or European competitions · Updated: 20 October 2026

TL;DR

  • The average is 9.71 corners per match (9,545 matches). The median is 10. Seven in ten matches finished with between 7 and 13 corners.
  • Home teams win more corners: 5.32 against 4.39 for away teams, a 55/45 split. The home side won more corners in 54.2% of matches; the away side in 36.4%.
  • The second half is busier: 5.16 corners against 4.55 in the first half, in every one of the 29 leagues.
  • Leagues differ by under two corners. Highest: Eredivisie (10.51), Championship (10.33), Belgian Pro League (10.17). Lowest: Greek Super League (8.76), Serie A (8.88), Argentina's Liga Profesional (8.93).
  • The record in our sample is 28 corners: Lyon 0-4 Lens in Ligue 1 on 17 May 2026, with Lyon winning 20 of them. No match had zero corners.
  • The month barely matters. Across 21 European leagues, the monthly average stayed between 9.59 (August) and 9.93 (March).

How we measured it

Which leagues. We took every domestic league in the StatPair database with at least 150 matches with full corner data in its most recent completed season. That gave 29 leagues. For leagues played from summer to spring we used 2025/26. For leagues that run on the calendar year (MLS, Argentina, Japan and the two Brazilian divisions) we used 2025.

Which matches. League matches only, including any play-off or split rounds that belong to the league itself (as in Belgium, Scotland, Denmark and Romania). Cups, super cups, friendlies and European club competitions are left out. The sample runs from 23 January 2025 to 20 June 2026.

What counts. Corners won by each team over 90 minutes plus added time, as recorded in our match statistics. First-half corners come from the half-by-half data; second-half corners are the full-match total minus the first half. Extra time doesn't apply, because league matches don't have it.

A check against earlier articles. The figures for the eight leagues in our league-by-league betting comparison match this table once rounded (Premier League 10.0, Serie A 8.9, Eredivisie 10.5 and so on), because they come from the same 2025/26 matches. This article adds 21 more leagues, the home/away and half-by-half split, and the distribution.

Home, away and half figures are rounded to one decimal, so they may not add up exactly to the total.

Highest-corner leagues

The Eredivisie led with 10.51 corners per match (301 matches), followed by the Championship (10.33, 547 matches) and the Belgian Pro League (10.17, 300 matches). The Eredivisie also had the highest share of busy games: 37.2% of its matches had 12 or more corners. The Championship and League One both averaged more corners than the Premier League (9.97).

Lowest-corner leagues

The Greek Super League had the fewest, 8.76 per match (232 matches), then Serie A (8.88, 373 matches) and Argentina's Liga Profesional (8.93, 434 matches). In all three, roughly one match in five reached 12 corners, and away teams averaged only 3.9.

Same sport, small gap

The full range is 1.75 corners per match, from 8.76 to 10.51. Most leagues (23 of 29) sit within half a corner of the overall 9.71. Two teams in the same league can differ by more than that in a single season. The league tells you where to start; it rarely tells you the answer.

For context, European club competitions in 2025/26 ran slightly lower than domestic football: the Champions League averaged 9.43 corners (226 matches, including qualifying rounds), the Europa League 9.16 (195) and the Conference League 8.96 (200).

How many corners are there in a match? The distribution

An average of 9.7 doesn't mean most matches land near 9.7. Here is how all 9,545 matches spread out:

Total cornersMatchesShare
0-59209.6%
6-82,73828.7%
9-113,21433.7%
12-141,87019.6%
15 or more8038.4%

A few things stand out:

  • The most common single totals were 8, 9 and 10, each in about 11-12% of matches. No single number happens more than one time in eight.
  • Seven in ten matches (69.8%) finished with 7 to 13 corners. The other three in ten are spread across very quiet and very busy games.
  • Very quiet games are rare. Only 177 matches (1.9%) had three corners or fewer, and none had zero.
  • Very busy games are rarer still. 169 matches (1.8%) had 18 or more.

The typical spread around the average (the standard deviation) was 3.4 corners. That's large compared with the gap between leagues, which is the main reason a league average alone can't price a match.

The Bundesliga is worth a second look. Its average (9.78) is close to the overall figure, but it had both a high share of quiet games (11.9% with five or fewer) and of busy ones (31.7% with 12 or more). Its matches were more spread out than most, so the average hides more there.

Most corners in a football match: the records in our sample

Al Najma v NEOMSaudi Pro League11 Apr 20262-13-2225

The record total in our 9,545 matches is 28 corners, in Lyon's 4-0 home defeat by Lens. Lyon won 20 corners and lost by four goals, a useful reminder that corners measure pressure, not quality of chances. The highest count for one team was NEOM's 22 corners away at Al Najma, in a game NEOM lost 2-1. Mansfield Town won 19 corners against Peterborough's zero in League One and still lost 2-1.

At the other end, the lowest total was one corner, in 11 matches, including Torino 0-3 Atalanta in Serie A and Werder Bremen 1-2 RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

Home vs away corners

Home teams won 5.32 corners per match and away teams 4.39, so the home side took 55% of all corners. The home team won more corners in 54.2% of matches, the away team in 36.4%, and they were level in 9.4%.

The home edge held almost everywhere, but its size varied. It was biggest in Brazil Serie B (5.8 against 4.3) and the Bundesliga (5.5 against 4.3). It was smallest in the Primeira Liga (4.8 against 4.7) and Israel's Ligat Ha'al (4.7 against 4.5), where away teams won almost as many corners as home teams.

The home edge also survived defeat. In the 2,854 matches the away team won, home teams still won 5.39 corners against 4.37. Over all 7,023 matches with a winner, winners averaged 4.85 corners and losers 4.79: practically level, and the losing side won more corners in 44.3% of those games. Winning a lot of corners is not the same as winning the match.

First-half vs second-half corners

The first half produced 4.55 corners on average and the second half 5.16. So the first half accounts for about 47% of a match's corners. The second half was busier in all 29 leagues, and the gap was biggest in the A-League (4.6 against 5.6) and League Two (4.4 against 5.4).

At match level, the second half had more corners in 51.9% of matches, the first half in 36.4%, and they were level in 11.7%.

First-half cornersShare of matches
0-334.6%
4-534.4%
6 or more31.1%

The most common first-half count was four (17.7% of matches). Home teams won 2.50 first-half corners on average and away teams 2.05. For why second halves are busier in general, see our first-half and second-half statistics guide.

Do corners change by month or season?

Not much. Across the 21 European leagues in the table (7,082 matches from August 2025 to May 2026):

MonthMatchesCorners per match
August6819.59
September6339.70
October6539.66
November7419.74
December6979.74
January6839.64
February8169.71
March7079.93
April7929.87
May6189.71

July (55 matches) and June (6) are left out because the samples are too small.

The whole range is a third of a corner. March and April were slightly busier and August slightly quieter. Winter weather doesn't visibly push corners up: December and January sat at the season average.

Across seasons, the picture is just as stable. The same 29 leagues averaged 9.74 corners over 21,327 matches from July 2024 to 19 October 2026, and 9.89 in the 3,236 matches played so far in the current seasons (2026/27, or 2026 for calendar-year leagues). Our set-piece era study looks at the longer trend in more detail.

Corners and goals

The number of goals in a match told us almost nothing about its corners:

Goals in the matchMatchesCorners per match
07049.86
11,7289.72
22,2889.76
32,1469.70
4 or more2,6799.64

Goalless draws had slightly more corners than high-scoring games. Draws overall averaged 9.91 corners and home wins 9.56. Don't assume a "goals league" is a corners league, or that an Over 2.5 match will also go over on corners.

What this means for betting

Start from the league, not from 10

The bookmaker's main line is usually 9.5 or 10.5 corners, close to the overall average. But a Serie A or Greek match starts almost a full corner below that, and an Eredivisie or Championship match half a corner to a corner above it. Before you look at the teams, note the league baseline from the table above.

Then move to the teams

The league average is a starting point, not a forecast. The spread inside a league (a standard deviation of about 3.4 corners per match) is much bigger than the gap between leagues. The real work is each team's corners won and conceded, home and away. Our corner betting strategy guide covers team corner styles, and our total corners betting guide shows how to combine both teams' numbers into an expected total.

Use the home/away split

Home teams win about 55% of corners. When you build a team corners bet, use the home team's home numbers and the away team's away numbers. In Portugal and Israel the home edge was close to zero, so don't apply the usual home boost there.

First-half lines need their own baseline

A first-half corners line should start from about 4.6, not half of 9.7. In 34.6% of matches the first half had three corners or fewer. Time of year, on the other hand, moved the average by a third of a corner at most, so it's no reason to back overs or unders on its own.

Method notes

  • Source: StatPair match database. Corner counts are full-time (90 minutes plus added time) as recorded in our team match statistics; first-half counts come from our half-by-half data.
  • Sample: 9,545 league matches from 29 leagues, 23 January 2025 to 20 June 2026. All 9,545 had full-time and first-half corner data for both teams.
  • Minimum sample: 150 matches per league with corner data. Leagues below this in their latest completed season (for example the Czech Liga, which has data only from February 2026) are left out.
  • Seasons: 2025/26 for leagues played from summer to spring, 2025 for MLS, Argentina's Liga Profesional, the J1 League, the Brasileirão Série A and Brazil Serie B. Our Brazil Serie B data covers May to November 2025 (212 matches), so it's not a full season.
  • Excluded: cups, super cups, friendlies, European and continental club competitions and international matches. European club competition figures are quoted separately and include qualifying rounds.
  • Month table: the 21 European leagues only, because calendar-year and southern hemisphere leagues follow a different season.
  • No xG. StatPair doesn't provide xG; this study uses corners, goals and results only.

Bottom line

The average football match has 9.7 corners: about 5.3 for the home team and 4.4 for the away team, and 4.6 in the first half against 5.2 in the second. Leagues range from 8.8 (Greece) to 10.5 (Eredivisie), a smaller gap than most bettors expect, while the month of the season and the number of goals barely move the total. Use the league average as your baseline, then do the real work on the two teams.
