Most bettors back the league they watch. That's the availability heuristic, and it means many bettors apply the same assumptions to every league.

The truth is, every league has a different normal. A 3-goal match is ordinary in the Bundesliga and unusual in Serie A. A 5-card match is routine in La Liga and rarer in the Premier League. If your model or your instincts don't adjust, you're betting on the wrong baseline.

We analysed the full 2025/26 season for all five major European leagues: 1,715 matches from the StatPair database. Here's what the numbers say.

Five findings that matter for betting

  1. The Bundesliga is in a different category for goals. 3.23 goals per game, 63.4% Over 2.5, and 42.9% of matches had 4+ goals, compared with 21.7% in Serie A.
  2. Serie A is the Unders league. 2.42 goals per game, 45.6% Over 2.5, and 9.7% of matches finished 0-0.
  3. Fouls and cards don't move together. Serie A had the most fouls (25.3 per game) but the fewest yellow cards (3.69). La Liga had almost as many fouls (25.2) and far more cards (4.43). Never use a league's fouls numbers as a stand-in for its cards.
  4. La Liga has the strongest home advantage. Home teams won 48.2% of matches; in Serie A only 38.3%, with away teams winning 35.4%.
  5. Corners barely change by league. 8.9 to 10.0 per game across all five. For corners, team style matters far more than the league.

Premier League - the most analysed, the hardest to beat

The case for: the most data, the most media attention and the most player-prop options.

The case against: the most efficient main markets in football. Sharp lines on every match within minutes of opening.

Premier League key stats (2025/26)

  • Goals/game: 2.73
  • Over 2.5: 54.8% · BTTS: 56.1%
  • Home win / draw / away win: 43.0% / 27.5% / 29.4% (the highest draw rate of the big five)
  • Fouls/game: 21.6 · Yellows/game: 3.83 · Reds/game: 0.11 (the fewest)
  • Corners/game: 10.0 (the most of the big five)

Where the edge is

  1. Player props - shots, shots on target, fouls and tackles get less bookmaker attention than match outcomes. Player props guide → · Player shots props →
  2. Cards markets with referee data - regular PL referees ranged from 2.74 to 4.68 yellows per game in 2025/26. Premier League referee stats →
  3. Bet builders - built from repeatable stats rather than goals. Bet builder hit rates →

Where the trap is

  • Match outcome (1X2) lines - sharp lines that are very hard to beat.
  • Big-club favourites - casual money piles in, and bookmakers know it.

La Liga - cards and home advantage

The case for: the strongest home advantage of the five, the most cards and clear quality gaps.

The case against: Real Madrid and Barcelona matches attract huge public money, which distorts their lines.

La Liga key stats (2025/26)

  • Goals/game: 2.71
  • Over 2.5: 50.1% · BTTS: 57.0% · 0-0: only 3.8%
  • Home win / draw / away win: 48.2% / 24.7% / 27.1%
  • Fouls/game: 25.2 · Yellows/game: 4.43 (the most) · Reds/game: 0.28 (the most)

Where the edge is

  1. Card markets - the highest card and red card rates of the big five. Cards betting → · Booking points by league →
  2. Home handicaps - home teams win almost half their matches. Asian Handicap guide →
  3. BTTS - 57.0% BTTS despite an average goal count, with very few 0-0s.

Where the trap is

  • El Clásico and the Madrid derby - massive public money distorts lines.
  • Promoted teams' first matches - too little data until the numbers settle.

Bundesliga - the goals league

The case for: the most goals in Europe's big five, with only 18 teams.

The case against: bookmakers know the Bundesliga is high-scoring, so league-level Overs are priced in. Bayern's dominance makes some matches very hard to bet.

Bundesliga key stats (2025/26)

  • Goals/game: 3.23 (the most)
  • Over 2.5: 63.4% · BTTS: 61.7% · 4+ goals: 42.9%
  • Home win / draw / away win: 43.6% / 24.8% / 31.7%
  • Fouls/game: 20.9 (the fewest) · Yellows/game: 3.83
  • Shots on target/game: 9.5 (the most)

Where the edge is

  1. Goals models - the high scoring rate gives Poisson and xG models more signal. Over/Under analysis → · Build a model in Excel →
  2. Higher Over lines (3.5, team totals) - where the market is less crowded than Over 2.5.
  3. Shots on target props - the most shots on target per game of the big five. Shots on target betting →

Where the trap is

  • Bayern big-handicap markets - priced tightly because casual bettors rarely oppose Bayern.
  • Matches after midweek cup ties - rotation reduces predictability.

Serie A - unders and fouls

The case for: the lowest-scoring of the big five, with the most fouls.

The case against: away teams win more often than in any other big-five league, which makes home favourites riskier.

Serie A key stats (2025/26)

  • Goals/game: 2.42 (the fewest)
  • Over 2.5: 45.6% · BTTS: 45.3% · 0-0: 9.7% (the most)
  • Home win / draw / away win: 38.3% / 26.3% / 35.4%
  • Fouls/game: 25.3 (the most) · Yellows/game: 3.69 (the fewest)
  • Corners/game: 8.9 (the fewest)

Where the edge is

  1. Under 2.5 and BTTS No - fewer than half of matches went Over 2.5. Defensive stats for Unders →
  2. Fouls markets - the highest foul count of the five. Fouls betting strategy →
  3. Away teams on the handicap - away teams won 35.4% of matches.

Where the trap is

  • Card Overs based on the league's "physical" reputation - the data says Serie A shows the fewest yellows of the five, despite the most fouls.
  • Corners Overs - the fewest corners of the big five.

Ligue 1 - home teams and fouls

The case for: less media attention than the Premier League, so prices outside the top matches can be softer.

The case against: PSG's dominance skews many team-level numbers.

Ligue 1 key stats (2025/26)

  • Goals/game: 2.81 (second-most)
  • Over 2.5: 52.7% · BTTS: 50.7% · 4+ goals: 32.3%
  • Home win / draw / away win: 47.0% / 24.3% / 28.7%
  • Fouls/game: 24.2 · Yellows/game: 3.75 · Reds/game: 0.25

Where the edge is

  1. Home teams - the second-highest home win rate of the five.
  2. Player props on smaller clubs - less attention than big-club players.
  3. Fouls markets - well above Premier League foul levels.

Where the trap is

  • PSG match outcome lines - short odds with little value.
  • Late-season dead rubbers - teams change behaviour completely. Match context analysis →

League-specific psychology traps

  • Premier League: confirmation bias - you watch your team, you bet your team.
  • La Liga: hot-hand fallacy - Real Madrid won 5 in a row, surely a 6th.
  • Bundesliga: recency bias - a team scored 4, you back them on a big handicap, they draw 1-1.
  • Serie A: reputation bias - "Italian football is physical, back the card Overs." The data says otherwise.
  • Ligue 1: availability heuristic - you back PSG every week because they're the team you see.

How to use league-specific edges

  1. Pick ONE league as your specialty. Don't try to model all five at once.
  2. Start from the league baseline in the table above, then look for teams that break it.
  3. Track results and closing line value separately per league. Some leagues won't suit your approach. Free CLV calculator →
  4. Refresh team numbers weekly. Form changes faster than you think.
  5. Skip your fan-bias league unless you can prove an edge over 200+ bets.
